Preventing and Controlling Rats and Mice - Brisbane

Signs of rat or mice activity

Signs of rodent activity

Once rodents have made their way inside your property, they will prefer to remain hidden during the day. It is often easier to identify a potential infestation by looking for signs of activity, rather than trying to spot an actual mouse.

What to look for:
  • Droppings and urine stains.  Look for these in and around the home.

  • Rodent odours.  House mice emit musky odours and urine has a strong ammonia-like smell.

  • Gnawing marks.  Teeth marks on food, building materials, wires and on the edges of beams.

  • Pets excited at night.   When rodents are around, pets will often become excited and especially have difficulty settling down at night.

  • Some rodents (norway rat) burrow.  Check for signs for burrowing along foundations and walls and under shrubbery.

  • Rodents make sounds at night.   Listen for scratching, gnawing and/or fighting.

  • Grease marks against floors, walls and skirting. This is caused by mouse fur constantly brushing against these surfaces.

How to prevent rats and mice from entering the home

Steps for rat and mouse prevention:
  • Reduce clutter. Unkempt areas give rats and/or mice plenty of spaces to hide and nest. If every room in your home is cluttered, your entire house can easily be a breeding ground for rodents.

  • Contain perishables. Keep all food in sealed containers and constantly clean crumbs off tables, counters and floors. Empty your rubbish bins frequently.

  • Eat in a dining area. If you eat in areas other than the kitchen, be sure to keep the carpets and floors well vacuumed so that vermin are not attracted to any crumbs left behind in those areas.

  • Examine the outside of your home to be sure that all possible entrance points are well sealed.

  • Remove any garbage and all other household rubbish away from your home.

  • Do not have firewood piled up near the exterior of your home.

  • Regularly clean under stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers and cupboards.

  • Remove food sources such as uneaten pet food off the ground, bowls of fruit and bread left on benches.

  • Seal up all openings with steel wool or caulk.

It is definitely possible to keep rodents from getting inside your home, however the larger the structure the greater the challenge. If you suspect you already have a rodent problem, do not delay in getting help. These little monsters are very unsanitary and will get into your food stocks and supplies in short order and destroy everything, even if they don’t consume it all. Once mice and rats enter an area where food is stored, everything is ruined and once they start breeding, things can quickly get out of control.

Why DIY rodent control does not always work?

Rodents have a short reproductive cycle which can make them difficult to eradicate from a structure. A female brown rat can produce up to 14 infant rats in only 21 days, so two rats can very quickly become many rats. Laying baits, traps or pellets around won’t do much unless they’re close to the rodent nesting area or access point. It takes 3-4 days before a rodent will feed on the bait and as it is designed for slow release, the rodents don’t drop dead, thus warning the other rodents in the nest. A professional pest controller doesn’t just lay baits around randomly; they seek out the rodent access points and nesting areas and treat these places accordingly. At certain times of the year, rodents can become a major problem, and often DIY methods can be ineffective. Employing a professional pest controller can take the hassle out of the process and leave you pest free.
