Flying termites!! What do I do?

Flying termites

Right about this time of year you may start to see flying termites or alates. These are breeding kings and queens from a nearby termite nest looking to start a new colony.

Flying termites or alates are light brown in colour and have four wings of the same size, usually over 10mm long. Termite swarms are very common and usually happen late spring or early summer, frequently before or after a thunderstorm.

Termites love moisture and humidity which is why they prefer to travel when the air is very hot and humid (usually before/after a thunderstorm). These flying termites flee the nest in search of food, water and a mate. Once they land, they shed their wings and start a brand new colony with their mate.

Termites are not distance travelers and their destination is largely dependent on the breeze and distance from their original nest. If you see flying termites it may indicate there is a mature termite nest close to your home. If you see lots of flying termites it means there could be a mature termite nest very close to your home, either in your property or your neighbour's.
