Spider control that doesn't include fire

Firefighters in Tuscon, USA have recently been called to put out a man's house after he elected to use a blowtorch to kill a spider, accidentally setting his home alight. It feels like every few months or so we hear a new story about someone that has decided to use fire as their preferred method of pest control, only to have it backfire spectacularly creating a scene whereby emergency crews are required. Thankfully, no one was hurt but all that is left of this man's house is charred, spider free remains.

Whilst I understand the urge to take to a spider with a flamethrower yelling "kill it with fire!" as I triumphantly expunge that eight legged freak from my home, I doubt very much my neighbors enjoy the scent of BBQ spider. For this reason (and countless others, one of which being I don't own a flamethrower), I prefer to use other pest control methods to keep my home, spider free (and fire) free.
